What are mala beads?

What are mala beads?

Malas seem to be everywhere these days.  From yogis to fashionistas, you've probably laid your eyes on these magical gems at some point.  They're more than just a pretty beaded "necklace."  Much more.  So what are mala beads?  Let's get to it!

Their roots . . .

These magical beads have been used for centuries as a tool for meditation.  Rooted in Buddhism and Hinduism, "mala" is the Sanskrit word for "garland."  There are 108 beads to be exact, an auspicious number for many reasons (we'll get to that in a sec), with one ‘guru’ bead.

Their purpose . . .

Traditionally (and still today), these beads help you to keep count of your mantras during meditation.  They have also evolved into reminders of your positive intentions.  Sometimes we need a visual or tactile reminder to bring us back to the present moment.  Malas serve this purpose.

Their magic . . .

Not into meditation?  No biggie!  Don’t let that intimidate you!  Our malas are for anyone who wants to connect with what they're putting on each day.  Each gemstone carries different meaning and with a combination of different gems, we have created some of the most beautiful intention-filled malas.  Manifesting love?  We've got lots of those for you.  Manifesting a boost in self-confidence or support in speaking your truth?  We've got more for you!  The list goes on.

Feel grounded, supported and connected as you move through your day.  Pause, reflect and come back to what is important and what matters most to you.  Trust in your journey.  Tap into your magic.  Follow your heart-felt intentions.

Their 108 beads . . .

Back to that auspicious number 108.  Why 108?

There's likely 108 answers to this question, but we'll share just a few.

It’s said that…

  • There are 108 energy lines that converge to form the heart chakra. That’s a whole lotta love right there!  <3
  • The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the earth.
  • There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet, each with a masculine and feminine quality totaling 108.
  • A Japa meditation cycle is the repetition of your mantra 108 times, one on each bead.

Our mala beads . . .

Our mala beads are made from sandalwood, dark rosewood and authentic gemstones sourced from all over the world.  We look forward to spending a week each year at the Tucson Gem Show where we have face-time with many of our suppliers.

Our sandalwood and rudraksha seeds are ethically sourced from Mysore, India.  We love our family-owned supplier who we met back in 2015 on our trip to India.  They follow sustainable and fair trade practices including adhering to the regulations of harvesting sandalwood, fair wages, safe work conditions and no child labor.  Our wood and seeds have not been treated with any oils to keep them naturally pure.

We hand-knot each and every mala with love and intention.  We know our malas will serve as meaningful reminders and join you on your journey through life.  From our hearts and hands to yours, we know you’ll feel the positive vibrations from these magical beads.

Let our mala beads remind you to stay connected, to be present and to serve for the greater good of all.  Be inspired and live the life you want to live.

For when a heart is intentionally stretched, it can never return to its old dimensions . . .
